ThronoCrigger – “Bloom”

Blending 8-bit console sounds (ChipTune) with Electronic Dance Music and FutureBass, ThronoCrigger’s upbeat style was a joy to explore while mixing and mastering the track “Bloom” for the EP Wasted Spring. Trying to retain dynamics while pushing that extreme bass heavy thump was the goal and Emi looks forward to whatever music Throno releases next.

Slutcode – Demo

Role: Sound Mix and Master

A punk-femme force, Toronto quartet Slutcode has a thrashy, synthy excited sound that is difficulty to capture in studio. Recorded live off the floor, no editing was executed for these three tracks. All tracks (including the bass) were recorded clean, and it was Emi’s main focus to “dirty” up the tracks to make them better fit their style. Lots of fun was had during the process, enjoy the tracks below:

GFTD – For You

Role: Sound Mix and some Recording

Emi’s second collaboration with his brother, “For You” is a sonically dense and complex piece. This time around, the two collaborated more intensively, having Emi engineer some of the recording process and apply his techniques to the mix. This is an example of how Emi likes to work best, to simply be the technical conduit for someone to achieve their vision. Listen below:

GFTD – Product of My Environment

Role: Mastering Engineer

GFTD (Gabriele Paternostro) is Emi’s far more talented younger brother. Presenting a collection of beats and rhythms, Product of My Environment is a bit of a concept album. Beginning with modern hip-hop style beats, moving into electronic dance music jams and wrapping up with chill reggae like jams, the album takes the listener on a journey through GFTD’s music expression and leaves you wanting more.

The Theory of Relativity – Virtual Choir

Role: Technical Coordinator

The Theory of Relativity was commissioned by the Canadian Music Theatre Project (of “Come From Away” fame). A special re-mounting of the musical was planned for the 9th Song, Stage and Screen conference, and as a way of celebrating the way the whole piece is a collection of different stories, it was decided a “Virtual Choir” would be incorporated into its finale. Made famous by Eric Whitacre, the concept is simple: many voices from around the world singing on their own are mixed together to perform a song. Implementing this idea became a 4 month long endeavour that culminated in a successful performance of the virtual choir in sync with their live counterparts on stage. You can find out all about the process and see the perfomance below:

Borders – EP’s (x2)

Role: Mix and some Recording

3 track Self Titled EP – 2013

4 track EP, “Drift” – 2015

Borders is a folk-rock outfit from Toronto that has seen its line-up change – switching out banjo, violin and mandolin on top of its guitar/bass/drums/keys setup. This made for a challenging set of mixes with so many instruments sharing the same sonic spectrum. Two EP’s were produced, with both available to hear below:
