Orchid

Another collaboration with stop-motion animator Chris Walsh, Emi provided the Sound Design for this neo-noir thriller set in the afterlife. Working with Yanni Caldas providing the Foley, Orchid shows a down on his luck assassin looking for an escape from the challenges of the afterlife.

The Fox And The Pigeon

Featuring a wonderfully told story and beautifully animated sequences, The Fox And The Pigeon was selected for the 2019 Best Student Film at The Annie Awards. Balancing the world within the story and the narrators voice was the main challenge in mixing this piece, and Emi is proud to have his name attached to it.

Moogaloops

This summer, Emi got to provide Sound Design for Sesame Street! The series of stop motion shorts marks another collaboration between Emi and Chris Walsh. Fun and whimsical in it’s presentation, designing sounds that evoke that feeling were paramount. This project also required some clever voice manipulation to make a single actor sound like a group of children. Enjoy!

The Curious Tale of Aunt Binx

The Curious Tale of Aunt Binx is another stop motion short produced by students at Sheridan College that Emi had the pleasure of mixing. Along with some distinct treatment of the ambiences, getting the timing of everything right was the biggest challenge in the blend of children’s tale and dread. With an amazing art style, this project is another one Emi is happy to have to his name.

Nier: Automata Tribute

A short but impressive animation by students from Gobelins School of Art, this action packed tribute to the game “Nier: Automata” features some fun audio action. The sounds of sword fighting, machine guns and robotic explosions were all meticulously edited and mixed to bring the animation to life.

Featuring a fantastic score by Tom Ferguson, this tribute is sure to catch the eye (and hopefully ears) of both fans of the game and anyone interested in high quality animation.

Senza Luce

Role: Sound Design and Mix

A collaborative effort between Sheridan College’s Animation and Music Theatre Programs, Senza Luce marks the second time Emi has worked on a project created by Neil Bartram and Brian Hill. The vision for this piece was to be an excerpt for a longer production. The full legnth musical was written, produced and mounted in 2017. Emi had a bunch of fun completing the sound effects for this project, many of which were borrowed from his son’s toy collection. Check out the animated song, “Perspective”, below:

Quarters

Role: Sound Mix

Emi often gets to mix student projects at Sheridan College, but few are as technically challenging as Quarters. A short story about four neighbouring apartments, and how each tenant is annoyed by what they hear coming from the others, this mix was a feat in organization and perspective. At any time, you can either see all four rooms at once, or focus on one room while hearing the other three. It’s a testament to the student’s great work that this was selected as one of TIFF’s Top Ten student shorts, which you can find the link to below:

The Shutterbug Man

Role: Sound Design and Mix

Emi’s second collaboration with Chris Walsh would fulfill two long time wishes for him: Mixing a project in surround and creating two degrees of separation between him and famed Italian director Frederico Fellini. Featuring the haunting voice of Barbara Steele (who was in Fellini’s 8 1/2 before becoming as horror icon in Italy), and meticulously animated horror, it has been featured in many festivals and remains one of Emi’s most creative expressions with sound. From the Shutterbug Man’s decent into madness and hell with every click of his shutter, to the ethereal ambiences that demark each scene, this became a great opportunity to showcase what sound can do.

A Modest Proposal

Role: Sound Design and Mix

4 mins – 2008

Yotam Dor’s “A Modest Proposal: To Solve Tomorrow’s Energy Crisis, Today” is a modern update to the Johnothan Swift classic. Instead of eating the poor, the solution is to use a new form of biofuel extracted from the fat of humans. Presented in a faux corporate video presentation, this piece had some interesting audio challenges, like what a cow-pig hybrid (or “bork”) sounds like, or a turkey-fish.
